Days between dates, or add days

Two questions come up constantly and both are easy to get wrong by one: how long is it between two dates, and what date falls a certain number of days from now. The first depends on whether you count the end date, which is why a contract term and a holiday booking give different answers for the same pair of dates. This calculator does both directions, gives working days as well as calendar days, and lets you choose whether the end date counts.

How to count the days between two dates

  1. 1

    Pick what you need

Switch between counting between two dates and adding or subtracting from one date.

  2. 2

    Enter your dates

Choose a start and end date, or a starting date and an amount to shift it by.

  3. 3

Choose whether the end date counts

Tick inclusive to count both endpoints, which is what contracts, notice periods, and leave policies usually mean.

Good to know

  • Exclusive by default: 1 May to 2 May is one day. Inclusive makes it two, which is the convention in most legal and HR contexts.
  • The weekday total excludes Saturdays and Sundays, but not public holidays, which vary by country — subtract those yourself.
  • Adding months follows calendar behaviour: one month after 31 January lands in early March, because February has no 31st. Add days for exact spacing.
  • All arithmetic uses real calendar dates, so leap years are handled correctly.

What people use it for

  • Counting the working days available before a project deadline
  • Working out a notice period, contract end date, or return date
  • Finding the date 30, 60, or 90 days from today for a payment term

Frequently asked questions

Does it count the end date?+

By default no, so 1 May to 2 May is one day. Tick the inclusive option to count both endpoints, which is what contracts and leave policies usually mean.

Can it count working days?+

Yes. The weekday total excludes Saturdays and Sundays. It does not know about public holidays, which vary by country, so subtract those yourself.

What does adding months do at the end of a month?+

It follows JavaScript's date handling: adding one month to 31 January lands in early March, because February has no 31st. Add days instead when you need exact spacing.

Is my data sent to a server?+

No. Calculating dates happens entirely in your browser using built-in web APIs. Nothing is uploaded, stored, or logged.
