Body Mass Index, metric or imperial

Body Mass Index is a single number derived from height and weight, used as a rough population-level screening figure. This calculator takes either metric or imperial units, gives you the value, and shows which standard category it falls into. It is a starting point for a conversation rather than a diagnosis, and because the calculation happens in your browser, the numbers you enter are never transmitted or stored.

How to calculate your BMI

  1. 1

    Choose your units

Switch between metric (centimetres and kilograms) and imperial (feet, inches, pounds).

  2. 2

    Enter height and weight

The BMI value is calculated immediately as you type.

  3. 3

    See the category

The result is placed against the standard World Health Organization ranges.

Good to know

  • Metric BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared; the imperial form applies a conversion factor to pounds and inches.
  • The standard adult ranges are: under 18.5 underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 normal, 25 to 29.9 overweight, and 30 or above obese.
  • BMI does not distinguish muscle from fat and takes no account of build, age, or where weight is carried, so athletes and older adults are often misclassified by it.
  • Different reference ranges apply to children and adolescents, and this calculator uses the adult ranges.
  • This is general information, not medical advice — talk to a doctor or dietitian about what your number means for you.

What people use it for

  • Converting a height and weight into the BMI figure a form is asking for
  • Checking a number quoted at a check-up in the units you actually think in
  • Comparing metric and imperial inputs without doing the conversion by hand
